SWOT analysis is a useful concept not only for conventional marketing to understand a business or brand positioning, but also for career development when we want to get clarity on our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. As we become aware of what we are good at or not, we know exactly where to look and what to improve without wasting precious time and resources on things that create less value. Let’s dive into each of the four elements of a SWOT analysis on a career level.
Strengths are what we are good at and may have something to do with our passion and preference. When we enjoy what we do, we already win half the battle because very often we don’t need to over stress ourselves to hit the finishing line. Our passion comes into play naturally and gives us great motivation to do more and better like a self-sustaining engine.
Weaknesses may be more obvious to others than ourselves because sometimes, we are being defensive or too proud to admit our flaws. It takes courage to face our weaknesses. Once we become aware of what we lack, we would know how to better up. However, building up on strengths may come easier than weaknesses due to the absence of passion.
Opportunities arise when we figure out how to turn strengths into our competitive edge in the workplace. Finding a job and being in a field that require our natural ability and align with our passion can maximize engagement and growth tremendously. This environment encourages and enables further development of what we excel in, which eventually becomes our unique competitive edge.
Threats appear when there is a gap between performance and expectation. For instance, if we prefer crunching numbers, analyzing data, and creating reports, working in an environment that requires lots of interpersonal skills handling live interactions with customers or front-line staff may not be a good match for our strengths and preferences. We may find ourselves struggling to deliver what is expected and even when we bend over backwards to do the job, we still miss the target or feel frustrated to keep going.
Knowing your SWOT therefore is critical to ensure finding the right job fit that appropriately empowers engagement, motivation, growth, and success in your career path. There are psychometric tools such as DISC, Enneagram, MBTI to help you find your SWOT.
